I beleive its the hybrid database that wmp uses, basically if you import a lot of media without full identify attached to it, it goes into the database as "unknown" as the PID field of the pseudo DB and when you update the entry with actual names, artists etc it thrashes the wmdb file trying to update the null entries.
Updated PID's in a decent dataabse often has a performance hit and i think once wmp database hits a certain size the empty duplicate pid fields cause it real issues when updated. Ive looked at the task many times and concluded its not file or memory or disk issues.
